You can figure out how to maximize your points with a little practice, but how exactly these sections are scored is hard to say. You get more points if you stay in the same pitch and rhythm of the song, though, although how to do that is kind of unclear. Singing gives you more options than you have in Rock Band, as you can activate your star power at any time, and there are also free-form sections in some songs where you can sing or say anything you want. The ability to pause a song and change the difficulty is great as well, it makes the game much more welcoming.
It takes some getting used to, but it's neat to be able to ration it out better: use one bulb to save someone, and then the next when you have a good multiplier going. If everyone activates it at once, the bulbs will simply run out. Star power is also shared, so when you activate star power, it only uses one bulb out of your meter, hopefully leaving some for someone else to activate. This ensures that everyone plays the whole time, but it takes some getting used to.
If the vocalist can't get his or her act together, the band will be booed off the stage. So if the vocalist goes into the red, it will begin to drag everyone down, forcing them to play better. Instead of a band member failing out and having to be saved with star power, now the band shares one rock meter, and every member of the band has a separate own-performance rating meter.
